Chiefly letters from Davis to his wife, Katherine Elizabeth (Shaw) Davis, or from their daughter, Katherine McAden (Davis) Crenshaw, while a student at St. Mary's School in Raleigh, N.C. (1870-1871); together with other correspondence and two photographs. Includes the earliest letters (1853-1861) written while Davis was away on legal business; 38 letters (Mar. 31-Sept. 27, 1862) discussing Captain Davis's life in camp prior to seeing military action during the Civil War; Civil War letters (Oct. 22, 1862-Apr. 15, 1863) written by Mrs. Davis to her husband; letters (July 3, 1863-Mar. 3, 1865) to Mrs. Davis concerning her husband's capture at Gettysburg, Pa., and imprisonment at Johnson's Island; post war letters (1866-1876) from Davis while attending the North Carolina General Assembly, campaigning from the 1870 elections, and campaigning for re-election to the U.S. Congress.
